Faith Champions

At our school, Religious Education (RE) comes to life through engaging lessons and meaningful experiences that help our children explore faith, values, and the world around them. Pupils are actively involved in worship, taking part in planning and leading assemblies, prayers, and special celebrations that reflect our school’s values. We are also excited to be developing our Faith Champions roles – giving children the opportunity to grow as leaders in faith, support their peers in spiritual development, and help shape the RE and worship life of our school community.

Archbishop of York Young Leaders Award

At Woods, we believe that young people have the power to make a real difference. Through the Archbishops’ Young Leaders Award, our Year 4 pupils will be developing confidence, teamwork, and a sense of responsibility as they learn to serve others and make positive changes in their community. The programme links closely with our school values of love, respect and perseverance, helping children to live these out in practical ways. It inspires our pupils to grow together, love their neighbours, and make a positive impact on the world around them.

Easter Service

Our Y4 class led a truly beautiful Easter service this week, showcasing Christianity as a global and expressive world faith. The whole service felt wonderfully invitational and inclusive, with BSL and adaptations so that everyone could join in fully. The children told the Easter story with such clarity and understanding, and it was lovely to see how confidently they shared it. We’re so proud of the strong church–school partnership shining through in every part of the service. The children even led an interactive Easter message using origami and storytelling, helping everyone reflect on the meaning of the cross in a really thoughtful way. And of course, the singing was fantastic — with the whole room joining in! It was also brilliant to see such positive parent engagement, bringing together home, school and church in a really joyful celebration.

ART…

Our pupils have enjoyed creating artwork inspired by the new RE syllabus, exploring both religious and non‑religious worldviews with creativity and respect. We were excited to take part in the SACRE competition linked to the new curriculum, and Year 4 collaborated on a piece themed “Many paths, one humanity,”.

Maundy Thursday

We enjoyed a special afternoon in Class 4 today as Annie joined us to help the children explore the events of Maundy Thursday. She led a thoughtful re‑enactment of Jesus washing the disciples’ feet, allowing the children to experience this moment for themselves and ask meaningful questions.
We then shared our own version of The Last Supper, breaking bread and drinking squash together in a calm and reflective atmosphere.
A huge thank you to Annie for making the session so memorable, and well done to Class 4 for their wonderful attitude. A beautiful way to continue our Easter journey.

Year 6 Visit and Lecture from Nigel Adams

Year 6 received a visit and lecture from Nigel Adams, founder of the Christian charities Hope Nottingham and Transforming Notts Together, which focus on social action and community support. He currently works as a development worker for Transforming Notts Together, helping to coordinate social action across the region.
This visit supported our current learning in the RE unit Incarnation – Was Jesus the Messiah? (Digging Deeper). Following last week’s lesson, where pupils researched a range of individuals and organisations such as Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the Amos Trust, and Owen Thomas, Nigel Adams kindly came to speak to the children.
He talked about his work, the organisations he supports, the practical projects he is involved in across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, and the ways he works for peace, justice, and reconciliation. He also explained how these actions connect to the teachings of Jesus.
We know the children found this a valuable and inspiring learning experience.

Other Religions

Bandi Chhor Divas

Here is one of parents who came to speak to us about Bandi Chhor. Bandi Chhor Divas, or “Day of Liberation,” is a Sikh festival that commemorates the 1619 release of Guru Hargobind, the sixth Sikh Guru, and 52 Hindu kings from prison. It is celebrated on the same day as the Hindu festival of Diwali, and Sikhs celebrate by lighting up gurdwaras and homes.

Preet Kaur Gill

Class 5 were very privileged to spend some time talking to Preet Kaur Gill – the first female British Sikh MP. It was very interesting to hear about the different things she has experienced and witnessed in her life and how these have influenced who she has become to be and do today. It was hugely insightful and the pupils could see that she is very inspirational. The children have been exploring the question ‘What can we learn from the great leaders and inspiring examples in today’s world?’. The children’s were invited to show connections/comparisons between different religions.
