Mathematics

Vision

At Woodborough Woods Foundation School, we aim develop children’s confidence, fascination and excitement of discovery through the teaching and learning of mathematics. We strongly believe that children should feel supported, guided and encouraged to achieve their maximum potential in challenging and exciting activities. Lessons will not only ensure that fluency skills are improving but also that children are improving their confidence in reasoning and problem solving.

Our children will thrive upon conquering the challenges and problems that mathematics will bring and not be afraid to make mistakes.

At Woods our aim is for children to leave as confident, skilled and resilient mathematicians; who understand that mathematics is a fundamental part of everyday life and the world we live in.

Intent

Through our provision we aim that children:

· will be able to apply their mathematical knowledge to solve problems, including those with real-life contexts, by choosing the appropriate operations

· can estimate the approximate size of the answer to check the reasonableness of their calculations

· will leave primary school with an efficient, reliable, compact written method of calculation for each operation

· develop fluency in mental calculations strategies, aided by informal jottings where necessary

· are confident in the fundamentals of maths and be able to reason mathematically and explain their mathematical thinking

· understand the importance of mathematical skills in everyday life

Implementation – Maths in Action

White Rose Yearly Overviews

Mathematics is an integral part of a child’s learning and development. It is essential to everyday life and is critical to ensure that children develop the suitable skills for future employment. Children acquire a certain range of tools from mathematics, such as: logical thinking, reasoning, fluency, problem solving and higher order thinking skills. These tools enable children to piece together different mathematical concepts and apply their knowledge to real- life situations. Maths is present constantly in our changing world, from money to measures to data handling. To give our future generation the best possible chance in life, an enriching and challenging maths education is vital to developing these key skills.
